T-Shirt Transfer Printing

T-Shirt Transfer Printing: Versatile and high-impact branding

Heat transfer printing is a highly versatile and effective method for applying a wide range of designs onto garments. The process involves using a heat press to apply a pre-printed design, or transfer, directly onto the fabric. This technique effectively glues the artwork to the material, creating a crisp, clean and durable finish.

One of the most significant advantages of transfer printing is the large variety of creative possibilities it unlocks. At John Roberts Associates, we can produce transfers in a vast palette of colours and an array of specialist finishes, including matte, metallic, fluorescent and even glitter. This flexibility makes it an excellent choice for eye-catching designs that need to stand out.

When to choose T-shirt transfer printing

Transfers are an ideal solution for specific types of garments and applications where other methods may not be suitable. We recommend this process for:

  • Difficult-to-print items: Transfers are perfect for applying logos to garments like Personalised Hi-Vis & Jackets and other outerwear, where the fabric or seams make direct printing challenging.
  • Performance fabrics: It is an excellent method for branding sportswear and Custom Running Vests, as the transfers are lightweight and flexible, moving with the fabric without impeding performance.
  • Vibrant, multi-finish designs: When your design calls for a unique finish like metallic or glitter, or requires consistent, bold colours on difficult materials, transfers deliver reliable and high-quality results.
  • Small, full-colour orders: Modern DTF (Direct-to-Film) transfers allow for full-colour, detailed designs with no minimum order.

Types of heat transfers we offer

  • DTF (Direct-to-Film) transfers: The latest in transfer technology. A digital printer creates a full-colour transfer that can be applied to a wide range of fabrics, including cotton, polyester and blends. It offers a soft feel and excellent durability.
  • Screen printed transfers: For larger runs, we can screen print your design onto transfer paper. This combines the durability and colour vibrancy of screen printing with the versatility of a transfer application.
  • Vinyl (HTV) transfers: A machine cuts your design from a sheet of coloured vinyl, which is then heat-pressed onto the garment. Ideal for simple designs, such as names and numbers.

Limitations and considerations

  • Feel on fabric: Some transfers can create a noticeable layer on top of the garment, which may not be as soft as DTG or sublimation.
  • Durability: Whilst modern transfers are very durable, they may not have the same lifespan as a screen-printed or embroidered design after many washes.
